Hunters and Trackers

How many of you have a website? How many of you have more than one? Maybe you have an official ‘corporate’ site – like this one, oui?
And maybe you have one where you post pictures for family and friends. And maybe you have your own Blog. (Watch out! It’s now big business, there is even a “Business Blog Consulting” site!) And maybe you have a family genealogy one on Rootsweb World Connect. Or maybe you even have more than one business that your market online.

I know a lot of people and companies in this position. But if they aren’t doing it for fun, they’re doing it for profit. Or the hope of profit. So – they are the equivalent of online HUNTERS. They are throwing out nets of information in hopes of catching some prey, er, I mean some potential clients/customers/business. ¶But what I see all too seldom is the patient TRACKERS. Maybe this is stretching the imagery too far, but all the wisdom I ever heard from long-dead famous hunters was this: to catch what you’re after, you need to be good at tracking.

Do you track what’s happening on your site or sites? Do you have web analytics tools? If not, why not? And do you know how to read them?

We have some really nifty tools on this site. I can get all KINDS of data, and I’m a bit of a data hound. It really does help me to understand whether or not I’m wasting my time writing this Blog. Or sending out Knowbits. Or putting up pretty pictures.

So today’s thought: Good hunting to y’all, and spend some time learning today’s tracking skills. You’re liable to capture some big game.
